Document Summary

4 key assumptions: individuals are social beings, individuals are socially determined, individual"s identity is socially acquired. (ex. Name, being raised a certain way, and acquiring certain social norms. : individuals create, sustain, & change social forms. (ex. Protesting, a way of changing society over time. ) People are trapped in their lives (e. g. , close up problems of work, family, neighborhood, etc. ) and rarely look at the big picture that reveals why. History and events are running people over, outpacing the ability of people to keep up and maintain their cherished values. We need a new way of thinking to free us: sociological imagination. Look for more of the larger forces that shape these experiences for people. We ask more large-scale questions regarding the structure and the stable patters of human behavior (e. g. , marriage) Another question we ask is where does societies stand in history and what mechanisms of change are being used, especially in studying social movements.
