Children"s knowledge, beliefs, judgments, and feelings about themselves: helps children understand things that happen to them (e. g. People want to play with me, i must be friendly: motivates them to engage in behaviors that others will respond to approvingly, helps them make choices appropriate for their goal. Self-perceptions are based on : past behaviors and performances, other perceptions: contingent self-worth, adults/parents/teachers, peers, biological factors. Gender differences in sense of self: gender schemas: self-constructed beliefs about the traits and behaviors of boys/girls. Self-compassion: self-kindness warmth and understanding toward the self when encountering pain or mistakes rather than self-criticism, common humanity recognizing that pain and mistakes are part of the shared human experience. Identity diffusion no exploration and no commitment. Identity moratorium exploration but no commitment (a necessary process not negative) Social cognition: process of thinking about how other people are likely to think, act and react.
