Document Summary
Self of self is the concept of who am i? and how someone perceives. A sense of self helps children organize things that happen to them, motivates behavior, helps envision future selves, children focus more on what they do well and children behave in ways that mirror self-perception (like self-handicapping) Past behaviors, past performances, other"s perceptions, parent"s view of their successes and failures, peer"s view of their competence and physical abilities, group membership. Slide 8: explain the general trends of sense of self. Slides 9-11 explain the development of sense of self in infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, early adolescence and late adolescence. Slides 13-14: explain gender, cultural and ethnic differences as connected to sense of self. Boys overestimate their abilities while girls underestimate them. Girls also have a greater difficulty accepting criticism and are more critical of their physical appearances. An ethnic identity develops from cultural pride, discrimination & bias, and spencer"s model of support and challenge. (below)
