PSYC 288 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: External Validity, Internal Validity
Document Summary
Tries not to in uence the behavior of the group. Ex: social psychologist joined a cult to see how they would act when the world actually did" end like the group predicted. Disadvantage: researcher could unexpectedly change the results in the environment (in uence the behaviors that you are observing) Use a coding scheme to record behavior. Ex: watching for speci c behaviors in a situation and recording these behaviors. Ex: looking at magazine covers over time, published diaries, facebook, instagram. The + and of the observational method. Consistency in coding is hard to get. The correlational method: systematically measuring the relationship between two or more variables. Surveys: as people about their attitudes or behaviors. Correlate observations: observe behaviors and see how they relate to other variables. Correlation coef cient ranges from -1 to +1. Positive correlation: as one variable goes up the other variable also goes up (0-1) Negative correlation: as one variable increases the other variable decreases (-1-0)
