PSYC 288 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Internal Validity
Document Summary
Research method (continued: observational method, researcher observes a group from within, tries not to influence the behavior of the group enthrography, very risky!!! Use a coding scheme to record behavior. Consistency in coding is hard to get: correlational method, systematically measuring the relationship between two or more variables, surveys: ask people about their attitudes or behaviors, correlation observations: observe behaviors and see how they relate to other variables. Correlation coefficient ranges from -1 to +1. A positive (+) correlation if one goes up, so does the other: sleep (up, gpa (up) A negative (-) correlation . when one goes up the other goes down: social media (up, gpa (down) Very small (+ or -) or zero correlation = not much of a correlation unrelated: eating veggies and health (+, # of drinks and soberness (-, husker touchdowns and wins (+) Even if variables a and b are perfectly correlated, we can not determine their causal relationship.
