PERI 8120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 45: Clindamycin, Metronidazole, Azithromycin
Document Summary
Explain the rationale, indications and contraindications for microbial testing in periodontal therapy. Rationale for microbial analysis/testing- potential to support the diagnosis of various pd"s, can be used to monitor pd therapy, periodontopathogens are sensitive to antibiotics (it works basically), and to decrease bacterial resistance by not just automatically issuing the antibiotics. Indications for analysis/testing- aggressive pd (localized or generalized, family members of aggressive pd), refractory pd, medical conditions predisposing to pd (diabetes), and periimplantitis. Contraindications- stable/inactive pd, only gingivitis, healthy patients (exception is family members of aggressive pd: list three antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Overuse, inappropriate rx, extensive agricultural use, few new antibiotics available, regulatory barriers: recognize and describe the five available methods for microbial testing. Checkerboard dna-dna hybridization: explain the steps of microbial sampling for bacterial culture and antibiotic sensitivity testing, know the advantages and disadvantages of systemic antibiotic therapy. Advantages- systemic, treats tissue invasive organisms, treats entire mouth, easy to administer, relatively inexpensive.
