Document Summary
Self-concept summarizes the beliefs a person holds about his own attributes and how he evaluates the self on these qualities. Includes content, positivity, intensity (the strength) and stability over time (ebbs and flows), and accuracy. What will change self-concept: success, transitions, meeting new people. Identity: label + categories we associate ourselves with. Self-image - how you perceive yourself and how you think others perceive you. Self-esteem - how you feel about yourself (emotional) Self-efficacy - a person"s judgment about being able to perform a particular activity (ability), a perception of your ability. High efficacy in one area does not mean high efficacy in another. When we have inconsistencies, this affects our self-esteem. Actual self: a realistic appraisal of the qualities we have. Ideal self: our concept of how we would like to be. Impression management: actively managing what others think of us. Gender roles vary by culture but are changing. Agentic roles: men expected to be assertive/have certain skills.
