Document Summary

Narcolepsy = syndrome characterized by abnormal sleep tendencies. Most prominently - excessive daytime sleepiness (eds) - hypersomnia. Dramatic pathological manifestations of components of rem sleep. Daytime somnolence is often misdiagnosed as laziness, fatigue, depression, etc. Interval between initial symptoms and diagnosis usually > 10 years. Excessive daytime sleepiness & sleep-onset rem periods. Symptom: involuntary napping (15-20 min) - refreshing (may include dreams) Typically occur during boring situations, but can occur dramatically. Narcoleptics take much less time to fall asleep - shorter sleep latency (range of 5 minutes) Feature of other hypersomnias, sleep apneas, sleep deprivation, etc. Narcoleptics - go straight into rem, then proceed into deeper levels (not normal) Cataplexy - sudden loss of postural tone (partial or complete) Most common = laughter/joy/mirth/surprise (can occur with more negative emotions) Loss of tone is typical to rem sleep so its popping out at the wrong time . Typically don"t suffer too many injuries because you can partially feel it coming.
