In brazil, relationship between the values depicted in nightly soap operas and fertility rates: rates were declining from 5 in the 60"s, to 2 in the 80"s. Telenovelas had a clear pattern, small, rich families, 1-2 kids, people watched this for 40 years, which cultivated. Can be more powerful in life than the government or religious institutions, schools: early tv/history of television. Inherited many technological features of radio pioneered by the same companies. Basically run by the same people as radio, wanted radio with pictures, a better radio. Early history of tv is closely linked to history of radio.
