SOC 4369 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: George Herbert Mead, Symbolic Interactionism, Sigmund Freud
Document Summary
Distinctive interactions they can have with other humans. Genie the wild child, acting like animals. Not human until you interact with other humans, critical time. Nature - born to be the way we are supposed to be. Nurture - we are human beings because of the environment/external factors: more important than nature in determining how we are. Charles horton cooley - parents help children develop the ability to interact with others: the looking glass self - the self image that reflects how others respond to a person, particularly as a child. As humans we develop a self image of how other people respond to us. If ferals are in isolation, they do not develop a self-image/self awareness/a sense of yourself. George herbert mead - concerned with micro level, individual mind set: social interaction priority, thinking is no more than internalized speaking/language. Humans vs non humans - both can make gestures, illicit an automatic response from an individual.
