Psych 202 - lecture 19 - treatments for psychological disorders. Almost people suffer from some type of mental disorder. Personal costs and social burdens associated with mental disorders are enormous. People may not realize their disorder needs to be treated. May be barriers to treatment such as beliefs and circumstances that keep people from getting help. People who acknowledge problem may not know where to find services. Clinical psychologists - academic or hospital settings. Psychiatric social worker - psychiatric hospitals, house calls. Psychiatric nurses - hospitals or residential treatment programs. Paraprofessionals - outreach programs, residential treatment programs. Psychotherapy : interaction between therapist and patient with psychological problem, goal of providing support or relief from problem. Medical/biological treatment : mental disorder treated with drugs or surgery. Psychodynamic psychotherapy: general approach to treatment exploring childhood events and encouraging individuals to develop insight into their psychological problems. Psychoanalysis assumes humans are born with aggressive and sexual urges that are repressed during childhood.
