Mass movement in europe in the decades before world war 1. Very weak and primitive kind of socialism. Pierre-joseph proudhon, charles fourier, etienne cabet, philippe buchez. Whose ideas were savaged in the final part of the communist manifesto. Pierre - printer, self educated, producers should get together, craftsmen should band together to get out from under the sway of the capitalists, appeals to craftsmen, little man socialism, hostile to politics. Early utopian socialists talk in terms of equal egalitarian communities, christian strain, hostile to politics. Starts to change after the middle of the century. Landmark movement: founding of the international workingman"s association ( first international ) Set up in london by karl marx. Gathers socialists of a variety of kinds. In the early years, there is conflict between those that follow marx and those that follow proudhon. Later, there are disputes between those following marx and those following mikhail bakunin.
