Document Summary

Radioactivity is the spontaneous emission of radiation in the form of particles or high energy photons as a result of nuclear reactions. 1898, marie curie discovers the radioactive elements radium and polonium. In 1905, albert einstein developed theory about the relationship of mass and energy. Otto hahn and fritz strassman, demonstrate nuclear fission. Albert einstein sends letter to franklin d. roosevelt on the possibility of producing weapons from uranium. The manhattan project occurred in: the first controlled nuclear chain reaction occurred in 1942. July 16, 1945, the first a-bomb test occurred in alamogordo, nm. August 6, 1945, an uranium based bomb was dropped on hiroshima, and three days later, a plutonium based bomb dropped on nagasaki. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different atomic masses. In alpha decay, the mass number decreases by 4 and the atomic (cid:374)u(cid:373)(cid:271)er de(cid:272)reases (cid:271)y 2. I(cid:374) (cid:271)eta de(cid:272)ay, the (cid:373)ass (cid:374)u(cid:373)(cid:271)er does(cid:374) t change, but the atomic number increases by 1.
