Work and Adolescents
Adolescent Work in the 20th Century
Before 1900s: Boys on the farm, girls in the household and animal care
18-19th century: Factor work, long dangerous conditions and health hazards
Age of adolescence led to a trend in staying school in the 1930s, child labor laws
Combining school + part time job (50s-70s)
80% of high school seniors worked by 1990
Relation between Work House and School Performance
*Decrease in GPA, skipping classes, decline in homework
*Not getting enough sleep, psychological issues
*Past 10hrs per week, negative psychological effects
Anxiety, depression, less sleep, disruptive to eating+exercise
*Past 20hrs per week: Same issues become CONSIDERABLY worse
Pros and Cons of Work
Adolescents who work 10+ hours a week
Use alcohol, smoke cigarettes, use drugs
BUT this is all correlational (don’t assume causation)
Working too much has a negative impact on adolescents

Majority never find the identity-based work we seek
Shift in thinking in recent years (older people usually viewed work as just a
source of income)
Occupational Goals

Document Summary
Before 1900s: boys on the farm, girls in the household and animal care. 18-19th century: factor work, long dangerous conditions and health hazards. Age of adolescence led to a trend in staying school in the 1930s, child labor laws. 80% of high school seniors worked by 1990. *decrease in gpa, skipping classes, decline in homework. *past 20hrs per week: same issues become considerably worse. But this is all correlational (don"t assume causation) Working too much has a negative impact on adolescents. Unlike adolescents, they are looking for a job that turns into a career. In the course of emerging adulthood, they may try 10 different jobs from 18-30. Majority never find the identity-based work we seek. Shift in thinking in recent years (older people usually viewed work as just a source of income) Super"s model: theory of development of occupational goals begins with adolescence, continues through five stages into adulthood.
