15 views1 pages

Document Summary

Black college students perform poorly compared to white students due to not social class but due to stereotype threat. Stereotype threat: threat of being viewed through the lens of a negative stereotype, or the fear of doing something that would in-avertedly confirm that stereotype. Tested black students on how well they perform on tests. The students performed better when they were relieved of test anxiety by steeles telling them they were graded on how they do the problem rather than correctness. Affirmative action: steps taken to increase the representation of women and minorities in education, employment and business. Preferential hiring people are hired because they are minorities or women. Preferential admissions people are admitted because they are minorities or women. Versions of preferential hiring: selection among equally qualified candidates, selection among comparable candidates, selection among unequal candidates, selection among qualified and unqualified candidates. The considering race is wrong argument: it is wrong to consider race when making hiring decisions.
