MUSI 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Octatonic Scale, Swan Lake, Nadezhda Von Meck
Document Summary
While melody is the linear progression of notes, harmony is the vertical arrangement of notes. Western harmony is based on 2 scales, major or minor. Scale: series of tones in ascending or descending order (interval of 8 notes) within an octave. Major and minor scales have 7 notes: c, d, e, f, g, a, b, Example: c, c#, d, d#, e, f, f#, g, g#, a, a#, b, c. Chord: 3 or more notes; triad: chord of exactly 3 notes. C major is based on notes from c major scale. D minor is based on notes from the d minor scale. Chords can be major and minor (also diminished, augmented, secondary dominant, etc). In a piece of music that is based on a g major scale, the g major key is called a tone key (home key). Early music through the renaissance used a modal system.
