Document Summary

What is genetic material and where is it found. Significance of crossing over in recombination of genes. Describe the structure of dna and its identification as genetic material. 1953: watson and crick discovered the structure of dna. Gregor mendel experimented by cross breeding pea plants over a number of generations and observed/followed different plant characteristics and how they change over generations. Any given characteristic of the plant is governed by distinct units of inheritence: these distinct units are now called genes. Each diploid individual has two copies of a gene, one from each parent: this is called inheritence. Alternate forms of gene are called alleles: alleles can be dominant or recessive, e. g. the gene for eye colour is the same, but because the gene has different forms, you get different eye colours. Each reproductive cell (i. e. gamete) has one copy of a gene (i. e. The alleles can be identical (homozygous) or non-identical (heterozygous)
