Document Summary

In the 21st century researchers are expected to follow basic ethical principles in the treatment of humans and other animals. Expected to produce research that is meaningful and helpful to society. Unethical choices made in the tuskegee syphillis study. Men were lied to about the nature of their participation and withheld information. If the men had known about the study in advance, some may have not agreed to participate. Were not told about a treatment for a disease that could be easily cured. Researchers targeted a disadvantaged social group in the study. Syphillis affects all people, yet all the men in the study were poor and african american. The belmont report: defines the ethical guidelines researchers should follow. Outlines three main principles for guiding ethical decision making; respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. These guidelines are used in many disciplines; medicine, sociology, anthropology, and basic biological research, as well as psychology.
