Document Summary

Fats, carbs, proteins used for e or building structures. Metabolism: chemical changes within cell to manufacture e, store e, or build new structures. E used by body is adenosine triphosphate (atp) 2 types of metabolism: anabolism: creation of large molecules from small w/ use of atp, catabolism: breakdown of large molecules into small releasing atp. Triglycerides: most of fat in body consist of 3 fatty acid chains attached to glycerol. Carbohydrates: long chains of monosaccharides linked together. Molecules may reform while others stay as building blocks once in the body. Building blocks circulate in body can be used to create new structures, form atp, stored for later use: storage form may be diff. from circulating form. 3 chemical rxns in cell to produce e from breakdown of food molecules. Glycolysis (glycolytic pathway: series of rxns in cytoplasm, anaerobic: does not require oxygen, produces 2 atp from 1 glucose. Inside mitochondria: aerobic: requires oxygen, produces 2 atp from 1 glucose.
