Psychological dependence: state that involves emotional/motivational withdrawal symptoms. Physical dependence: physiological need for a drug due to chronic use; involves persistent physical- somatic withdrawal symptoms. Desire to avoid withdrawal sickness, and abstinence syndrome which causes physical dependence (addiction) Common drugs that dont lead to addiction = marijuana and cocaine. Emotional factors that play a part in drug dependence. Personal characteristics of user, their expectations about drug"s experience, society"s attitudes and possible responses, settings in which drug is used. Intensity of psychological experience w/ drug difficult to define. Increased blood pressure, pulse rate, and breathing rate. Opium narcotics - opium (poppies) a common source of narcotics. Morphine: extracted from opium; used to make heroin. Heroin: made from morphine; dissolved by boiling in water and injected. Effect: high + drowsiness and a sense of well being lasts for 3-4 hours. Codeine: present in opium; prepared synthetically from morphine.
