Document Summary

Textbook notes - chapter 2: the neural basis for cognition. Capgras syndrome is rare but can result from various injuries to the brain and sometimes in people with alzheimer"s. Someone with capgras is able to recognize people in their world but are convinced that some of these people are not who they appear to be (i. e. the real husband, the person insists, has been kidnapped) A person with capgras insists there are slight differences between the imposters and the people they have replaced". Face recognition involves two separate systems in the brain. One system leads to a cognitive appraisal. One system is more a global, emotional appraisal. When these two appraisals agree, the result is a confident recognition. In capgras, the emotional processing is disrupted, leading to an intellectual identification without a familiarity response. Information about the portrait of the physical makeup of the brain was gained in older studies from positron emission tomography (pet scans)
