Recently came about, 1950s-1960s when cog. psych came about. Cognitive psychology started as the scientific study of knowledge. All require storage, memory; memory is the core. If something happens to the memory system, it will impact the system. We can bring inferences to the table located in our memory system to be extra creative with language. A large range of our thoughts, actions, and feelings depend on knowledge and memory. Understanding a story or conversation depends on the other knowledge. We are able to make inferences to fill in the gaps in the story. The individual h. m. (1926-2008) was a patient with amnesia. Most famous patient in the history of neuroscience. In his mid-20s, hm had brain surgery to control severe epilepsy, but after, he was unable to form and store new memories. He could only remember information from before surgery (i. e. , before surgery, his favorite uncle was alive.
