PSY 3301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Neurological Examination, Sensory Deprivation, Lateral Hypothalamus
Document Summary
Our subjective feelings and thoughts influence our actions: emotions : Behaviour that seems purposeful and goal directed. Includes regulatory behaviours, which are essential for survival, and non regulatory behaviours, which are not. Hypothalamus (plays a large role in our motor behaviour) We might think that the most obvious explanation for our behaviour is simply that we are always acting in a state of free will. We do what we want and have the choice to do so. A patient in a mental institution, sat down to eat an appropriate lunch. 20 minutes later, during craft time, he was found eating glue and was moved outdoors. 20 minutes following, he was found eating dirt. Upon neurological examination, a tumour was found in his hypothalamus causing him to be hungry all the time. So, is steve exercising free will in his behaviour: probably not. The nervous system, not free will, produced this behaviour and likely produces others.
