The most deviant behaviour result of insufficient social control. 1) internalized control from within through conscience. Every society tries to instill rules & norms in conscience of children. Most powerful if entirely effective, no need for other 3 clusters. Rules & norms of society not always agreed upon doesn"t allow for perfect socialization. Strong internal control only when child completely accepts parent. Indirect control disapproval parent might show. 3) direct control means of restriction & punishment. No society relies solely on individual to regulate own behaviour. Additional control punishment, disapproval, ridicule, ostracism, banishment informal. Controls imposed by police or other officials. 4) alternative means to need satisfaction needed do not have to engage in deviant behaviour to get what they want. Readily available set of alternatives other 3 clusters have stronger influence on likelihood of deviant behaviour.
