PHL273H1 Lecture Notes - Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Traditional Knowledge, Wise Use Movement
Document Summary
Alternative to western ways of knowing things. How western people describe it in harmony with environment, deep love, etc. Pierotti & wildcat reject this as inaccurate. Fundamentally diff ways of thinking of environment significant practical. Approached court w/ radically diff conceptual scheme. Argument nobody owns this land, land owns us. Don"t get very far if this is your argument in a english based court system. Have to reorient themselves in order to settle things see in terms of land and owner. Traditional ecological knowledge goes well beyond knowledge . To justify belief on set of facts much more than that. 1) wise use focused on extraction. Environment effectively & fundamentally a resource. Don"t do things to it that prevent environment from being valuable to us . Humans are somehow autonomous, distinct of, control over environment set. Not fundamentally a part of it thus we ought to do something to it (whether use apart from natural environment or conserve)
