Will be looking at related topic surgery/mutilation in response to crime. In some case, drugs as direct substitute for surgical procedures. Law recognizes very specific relationship btw psychotic symptoms & blameworthiness. Recognized for well over 150 years that psychosis can negate responsibility in 2 ways. 1) psychosis causes subject to act violently w/out any conscious control over their actions mental disorder automatism. Something like this accepted as excusing in english system for over 1000. 2) psychosis causes delusions & hallucinations that would make subject"s actions legal/otherwise excusable. Subject has no way of distinguishing these thoughts/perceptions from. Physicians & psychiatrists have gradually built up arsenal of anti-psychotic medications years reality that can remedy these situations. Many such drug effects discovered by accident. Drugs often only work for some patients. Ironically, crucial dilemmas turn on efficacy of these drugs.
