Document Summary

A band: is the band that covers the entire thick filaments even the region it overlaps with the thin filaments. The length of the sarcomere between the z lines shortens during muscle contraction but the length of the thin and thick filaments does not change. The thin and thick filaments interdigitate in such a way that there is 6 thin filaments always surrounding 1 thick filament: general mechanism of contraction: neurochemical stimuli reach the neuromuscular junction and travels to the t tubules. The t tubules send this neurochemical stimulus to the sr and cause channels to open and an influx of calcium ions. This causes the thin and thick filaments to slide passed one another and cause the entire sarcomere to shorten, and therefore the entire muscle to shorten. G-actin are the monomers of actin that only exist at low ionic strength.
