Increasingly, parenthood is detached from biology as individuals and couples who cannot reproduce biologically use adoption, surrogates, and sperm, egg, and embryo donors. Childbearing is no longer based on age marriage and heterosexuality. Throughout most of the 20th-century heterosexual marriage was the benchmark by which people were judged. At no other time in history has there been as much variety, choice, and fluidity in different aspects of intimate relationships and families. Ex: married, cohabiting dating, living apart couples: couples who maintain separate homes. Polyamorous relationships: transparent, consensual intimate relationships between multiple partners of any sexual orientation who may or may not live together. Partners who share a household, partners who decide to maintain separate households. Traditional intact families, blended families, lone-parent families. Fluidity in sexual orientation and growing acceptance lgbtq+ community. Variation in sexuality and sexual relationships, transformed by social media.
