Used in 1974 as the shorthand form of internetwork. Most important internetwork: connects private, public, academic, business, and government networks. Network technologies can be completely different: ethernet (wired and wireless), man, wan . Any computer connected to a network is called a host. Connection is made using a device called a network interface card or nic network: can be lan, or an internet (network of networks) Different transportation types (air, train, car, bike, etc. ) Isp network: network of an internet service provider. Access network: connects subscribers to their service provider. Core network: connects isps to one another. Belong to telecom and internet service providers (isps: use different networking technologies. There are thousands of networks (with different technologies) interconnected as a mesh to form the internet: creates multiple routes for information to travel among connected nodes. Increases the resilience of the network in case of a node or connection failure. All networks follow the rules defined by tcp/ip protocol stack.
