Document Summary

Uses, and side effects of the medication lesson 24: what. Uses, and side effects of the medication diazepam is a medicine that is available only with a doctor"s prescription and is a member of the benzodiazepine family of medications. It is often used in the treatment of anxiety disorders, as well as alcohol withdrawal and muscular spasms. In order for diazepam to be effective, it must first raise the level of activity of the neurotransmitter known as gamma-aminobutyric acid (gaba) in the brain. This, in turn, helps to relax the central nervous system. One of diazepam"s many applications is as a therapy for anxiety disorders. These conditions are distinguished by the presence of sensations of excessive concern or dread, which might get in the way of normal day-to-day activity. Diazepam"s ability to relax the central nervous system may be helpful in alleviating some of these sensations.
