Creatine kinase is the enzyme that catalyzes the reaction that converts creatine into creatine phosphate. The muscles and nerves contain the highest concentration of creatine kinase because they require large amounts of energy to function properly. High levels of creatine kinase found in the body can be markers of damage to the body such as heart attack, muscle breakdown, kidney injuries and muscular dystrophy.
