Case & Scenario: Thumbelina

Thumbelina is a 6-year-old girl. Her mother is concerned about her daughter's attachment to a pacifier and to her thumb, as well as her apparent inability to give up her habit of sucking on them. Thumbelina has just entered kindergarten; she and her mother have agreed that she will not take her pacifier to school with her, although she may have it back when her mother picks her up at the end of the day.

Adopt the viewpoint of the Behavioral Theory and discuss the questions that psychologists who hold that theory would ask, whom they would interview (e.g., the child, his/her parents, teachers, peers, siblings), and why they would gather that information. Use the basic assumptions and principles of that theory to explain the current behavior of the child. Predict what the future holds for the child; for instance, indicate what that theory would imply about the possibility and means of achieving behavior change.

Evaluate the theoretical analysis, and discuss whether you agree with the conclusions reached based on this theory. Why or why not?
