Kinesiology 1088A/B Lecture Notes - Learned Helplessness
Document Summary
Lh is an acquired belief that you are incompetent. Result of continual negative feedback from significant others about a specific aspect(s) of performance or behaviour. Doesn"t occur if generally negative about a number of aspects. Specific feedback is perceived to be a true judgement of ability. Variations in attributions occur according to: gender males differ from females on, types of attributions following success and failure, amount of pride/shame experienced, expectancies for future performance. If attributions are inappropriate they can lead to dissatisfaction and poor future expectancy. The best place to make changes is at the attribution phase (back to attribution process diagram) With lh, provide a lot of success then show them how to interpret the cause of periodic failure by contrasting it with the earlier successes and attribute failure to lack of effort. Encourage attribution more to external rather than internal factors (when appropriate) to maintain self-esteem (outcome out of one"s direct control)
