The following practice problems are intended to guide you in your preparation for the syntax, semantics and pragmatics part of the final exam, which covers about. The remaining 20% will be from phonetics, phonology and morphology. The questions in each subsection below are similar in style to those in the actual exam. Make sure you do the problems yourself before seeing the answers: syntax, for each of the following sentences, choose one of the four trees that best represents the structure of the sentence given. We are interested in where in the tree the pp in bold will appear - you can ignore the pp in italics. Choose the appropriate tree: circle the (non)constituents (un)successfully replaced, put the relevant letter and /*. That hairy one will scare the children out from under the bed. That hairy monster will scare them out from under the bed. *that hairy monster will do so out from under the bed.
