Music of a narrative or descriptive kind, the term is often extended to all music that attempts to represent extra=musical concepts without resort to sung words. Brings up images, stories and words which are not native to the music itself. Symphonic poem like dukas"s l"apprenti sorcier from fantasia. Some programmatic music forms part of a larger work: Vocal movements interspersed with instrumental movements (which are programmatic). Unstaged opera oratorio style, reciting the work. Berlioz was impacted by the production of romeo and juliet in 1827. Saw it in english and did not understand it, but incredibly impacted by it. Scherzo - fast middle movement in triple metre. Musically depicts queen mab, a tiny creature and bringer of dreams described by mercutio in romeo and juliet. Soldier distinct lots of volume. Spanish blades portrayed by horns and full brass. Queen mab describes all the people he visits.
