Data collected according to the outsider researchers" questions/categories. Deductive; goal of being able to test hypothesis. Seeks to see what insiders say and understand about their culture. No hypothesis, data collection follows from participants findings. Prompted by project camelot & the vietnam war. One of first discipline to come up with ethic code. Main responsibility is to ensure safety of people participating in research. 1870s armchair approach: sit on armchairs and read other people"s accounts and come up with own findings based on secondary sources. 1900s verandah : invite local to their setting to talk to them about situations. Today participant observation : living with people in culture for extended duration, participating in their everyday life, learning their language. Goal: to record as much as possible of people"s language, rituals, song and social life because many cultures are disappearing. Most research conducted in small isolated cultures. Branch of anthropology dealing with scientific description of individual cultures.
