Interdependency explains why functioning of the family system is not always smooth. Families tend to attain equilibrium + have boundaries that vary how vulnerable they are to outside influences. Warmth and nurturance parents children more likely to accept and internalize parental standards: control. 2 types of control: 1) behavioural (setting reasonable rules), 2) psychological (emotional- directed tactics, ex, shame, guilt etc. ) 4 types of parenting style: authoritative parenting: warm, responsive, involved yet unintrusive. Set reasonable limits and expect appropriately mature behaviour from their children energetic-friendly children: authoritarian parenting: harsh, unresponsive, rigid and use power-assertive methods of control. Irritable children, fearful, moody and vulnerable to stressors: permissive parenting: parents exercise inconsistent discipline and encourage children to express impulses freely.
