Early history of the hebrews: monotheism, distinct nature of god: all-powerful, transcendent, chosen people hebrews/israelites, free will of people, punishment doesn"t keep people from straying away from god, concretization of ethnic religious identity. Persia: major powers of ancient near east in mid 6th century.
