PSYC 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 58: Cognitive Dissonance, Observational Learning, Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Authoritarianism = unquestioning acceptance of attitude given by authority figures. Conservatism = unquestioning acceptance of attitude provided by tradition. Persuasion involves 4 elements, source, receiver, message, channel. Learning theory: learn from parents/peers/traditions, emotional component created through classical conditioning, evaluative conditioning tries to transfer emotion attached to. Ucs to new cs: someone else"s attitude may rub off through observational learning. Dissonance theory: inconsistency among attitudes propels people in direction of attitude change, cognitive dissonance = related cognitions are inconsistent (contradict each other) Elaborative likelihood model: 2 routes to persuasion, central route - carefully ponder content/logic of persuasive messages, peripheral route - depends on non-message factors attractiveness, credibility, central route leads to more enduring attitude change conformity and obedience. Conformity = yield to real/imagined social pressure (determined by group size & unanimity) Normative influence = conform to social norms, fear of social consequences. Informative influence = look to others for guidance about how to behave.
