Frustration with behaviouralism"s view that such unobservable mental processes should not be studied lead to the emergence of cognitive linguistics. Cognitive linguistics involved the attempt to understand the mental processes that underlie what people think and do. The current movement to better understand brain mechanisms that underlie what people think and do. Brain mechanisms: different areas of the brain that are involved in which type of thought processes or behavioural processes. 3 major perspective in experimental linguistics: the behaviouralist (learning) approach, the cognitive approach, the neuroscience (biological) approach. Sociocultural approach: emphasizes research into the role of what people think and do because of their position in a larger group of people.
