Cartwright: dreams may symbolize present life concerns, may be involved in resolving/coming to terms with currnt life problems. x: emotional dreams associated with faster recovery from a bad divorce. Mental clean-up & updating: sleep may provide opportunity for: eliminating useless information learned during the day, establishing new connections to accommodate new learning and storing important experiences in memory. Dreams reflect a sorting and scanning process needed to deciding what info from the day is important and what can be discarded. Activation-synthesis theory- during rem sleep, random neural messages are sent from the pons (in the brain stem) to sensory and motor areas in the cortex of the brain. The cortex tries to synthesize (make sense) of this activity, leading to dreams. *at different times dreaming could be: -wish fulfillment. Reflection of brain activity (random or mental) clean up. Effect on the brain promotes: unique experiences, feelings of euphoria. Drugs that effect processes in the brain, effecting conscious experience and behaviour.
