Document Summary

The soul can exist without the body after death (and go to heaven hopefully) Matter and its properties can be studied on their own. As opposed to the idea that material things all are bale to think. Based on clear/distinct idea of 2 very different kinds of things (mental and physical) Base don thought that i can conceived of them being separable and separate. I can conceived of me as being without a body, and not without a mind. Commands of mind don"t always get carried on by the body. Yet the soul is clearly superior to the body as far as knowledge is concerned. Nature instructs descartes that he should tend to the body and its perceptions (pain, pleasure, sensory input) but only insofar as they are checked by the understanding. The truth of things can be reached by the understanding alone. The senses and the body in general are only to guide the understanding.
