Document Summary

Central nervous system (cns) comprises the brain and the spinal cord. Peripheral nervous system (pns) consists of everything outside the skull and spinal column. Carry sensory signals from eyes, ears, skin, etc to cns. Carry sensory signals from internal organs to cns. They receive information from other cells and carry it to the soma. Terminal buttons are button-like endings of the axon branch. They release neurotransmitters after receiving an action potential. They connect with another neuron via a synapse. Soma (cell body) is the metabolic centre of the neuron. It carries information from the soma to the terminal buttons. The axon is insulated by a fatty myelin sheath. Multipolar neurons have one axon and many dendrites attached to its soma. Several dendrites allow for integration of a great deal of information. Bipolar neurons have two processes leaving the soma. At one end, there is a single dendritic tree.
