Chapter #4 nursing"s journey from semi- professional to professional. Research shows that women predominantly occupy the subordinate(lower ranked) positions in the field. Originally profession were reserved for occupations based on expert knowledge, autonomy, self regulation, monopoly, and a service orientation for the good of the public. 2 common inferences about men in nursing is homosexuality and that they choose nursing b/c they failed to become physicians (gender discrimination) Hospitals are no longer assigned the task of educating and training nurses, but they still have a voice in nursing practice when it comes to nurses working in acute care. Nurses working within the hospital have little autonomy and must work according to the mandate set by the employer. Basically women work = pink collar work. Occupation culture guides and interprets the tasks and social relations of work. Occupation culture becomes the determinant of our social identity, self conception, and social status of ppl working.
