Document Summary
Five key higher cognitive functions: acquiring and using language, forming concepts and categories, making decisions, solving problems, reasoning. 9. 1 language and communication: from rules to meaning. Social species have systems of communication that allow them to transmit messages to each other. Vervet monkeys have three different calls depending on who the predator is. Language: is a system for communicating with others using signals that are combined according to rules of grammar and convey meaning. Grammar: is a set of rules that specify how the units of language can be combined to produce meaningful messages. Knowledge in our brains is effected by this. Human language has only recently evolved in the past 1-3 million years ago (speech) and 6,000 years ago (written) Phonemes: the smallest units of sound that are recognizable as speech rather than as random noise. Phonological rules: a set of rules that indicate how phonemes can be combined to produce speech sounds.
