SOC103H1 Chapter : SOC103 Starting Points (ALL)
Document Summary
Sociology emerged in the 19th century in response to the rise of new social problems associated with industrialization, urbanization, and political revolution: others suggest that sociology was a direct result of: The questioning of religious belief and political tradition. Sociologists have always tried to explain differences between societies: why we do things this way and they do things that way. Herodotus (the world"s first historian) wrote about differences that often led to mistrust and war between greeks, persians and egyptians. Voltaire (a french enlightenment thinker) wrote about differences between the english protestants and french catholics. Max weber wrote about protestantism, catholicism, judaism, confucianism, hinduism, and other religions to understand why capitalism arose in northwestern europe, but not elsewhere. Society is the largest-scale human group, whose members interact with one another, share a common geographic territory and share common institutions. Sociology is the systematic study of social behaviour, or the study of society: oriented to solving problems.
