Specific components vs. non-specific components: non-specific components: enz i and hpr. There is only 1 variance of enz i and hpr in a cell. They can work with any enz ii: specific components: enz iia,b,c. Enzyme ii"s are specific to a certain substrates. Also, they all have to work together (a, b, c) to carry out the function. Plateau at which substrate enters cell marks the point at which most of the periplasmic binding proteins are bound to a substrate. (carrier population is saturated with substrate) G-ve = 2 membranes with periplasm and thin peptidoglycan layer in between: second membrane allows for proteins to float around the periplasm. Important physiological differences between g+ve and g-ve bacteria. G+ve bacteria: more susceptible to penicillin, spore form of this type of bacteria are more resistant to mechanical stress and heat. Note that not all g+ve bacteria create spores: need more nutrients and minerals in order to thrive.
