Psychology: scientific study of the mind, brain, behaviour: biological: molecules, brain structure, psychological: thoughts, feelings, emotions, social cultural: relating to others, personal relationships. 1875 psychology is born: late 1800s, psychology broke away from philosophy & began to use the tools of science to explore the mind. In 1875, william james created a small psychology laboratory at harvard university. In 1879, wilhelm wundt conducted the first psychology experiment in leipzig, Representative heuristic: make judgements based on a typical prototype. Availability heuristic: judgement based on how easily something comes to mind. Overconfidence: tendency to overestimate our own predictions. Hypothesis: testable predictions derived from sci theory. Pseudoscience: set of claims that seem scientific but aren t. Warning signs: exaggerated claims, overreliance on anecdotes: referencing first hand experiences > science, lack of connectivity to other research, lack of peer review, lack of self-correction, meaningless psychobabble : using bullshit psych terms to sound legit.
