Document Summary

Comes back to the idea of authority and legitimacy what is authority? is the right to exercise power that is accepted by the governed as legitimate. It also comes down to the granting of rights and responsibilities to particular individuals and groups so they can perform a community function. Society is governed by the idea that we accept that certain people will have authority over us. We often use uniforms to establish whether or not someone can exert authority over us; without this people on their own lack this authority. This counts as socially approved because the masses in general agree to this. The power isn"t given to the person; rather the institution they represent get the power and due to association to that institution they have it as well. 3 types of authority: traditional: like a king, usually in earlier history, power was in certain individuals, often because of heredity or custom.
