Thursday, october 3, 2013: characteristics of organic solidarity. * a high divison of labour -->grocers, construction workers, teachers. * people are no longer self-sufficient -->dependent upon others to perform tasks that are essential for their survival. * people are dissimilar & engage in specialized activities. * common beliefs & feelings among the members of society become very general (because of growing dissimilarity) * secularization -->the declinging influence of religion in society. * durkheim argued that people are now bound together through the division of labour. * highly specialized individuals -->must co-operate & depend on one another. * social solidarity is based on the division of labour. * everyone has to do their part: a new basis for formal laws. * formal laws are essentially religious in nature. In modern societies formal laws will often reinforce the rights & responsibilities that people have in a complex division of labour.
